Author: Evangelist Ted R. Weiland

The Second Commandment is cited eight times in the Old Testament:: Exodus 20:4 20:23 34:17 Leviticus 19:4 26:1 Deuteronomy 4:23 5:8 and 27:15 and three times in the New Testament: 1 Corinthians 10:7 10:14. and 1 John 5:21.

Some Christians have difficulty distinguishing between the First and Second Commandments because they both relate to the worship of false gods. Second Commandment infraction is usually described as idolatry. The Prophet Isaiah depicted an idol as something that men form with their hands:

Their land also is full of idols: they [the nation of Israel] worship the work of their own hands that which their own fingers have made. (Isaiah 2:8)

The prophet Ezekiel described an idol as something that men erect in their hearts:

And the word of Yahweh came unto me saying Son of man these men [the elders of the house of Judah] have set up their idols in their heart and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face.... (Ezekiel 14:2-3)

An excellent study that will clear up any question in regards to the Second Commandment.
