EXCERPT: SHOULD WOMEN WEAR SLACKS? "The woman shall not wear that which pertains to a man neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord" (Deut.22:5) For many years this verse has been the text for fervert sermons against women wearing slacks. Since the custom in our times is that men wear trousers some have supposed that a woman who wears a garment that covers both legs and is divided in the middle has disobeyed the Lord. With most who hold this view it matters little if the woman is climbing a ladder working in a garden or taking part in sports activities. To them only a dress is proper and wearing slacks is wrong, is a sin, is un-Christian. A consistent study of Deuteronomy 22:5 however will show that it has no reference to women wearing slacks....

Over the years we have seen numerous little tracts which quote Deuteronomy 22:5....Never once have I seen one of these that ever attempted to explain why this taboo was given or to show it within its context!

Actually there is more difference in men's and women's clothing today (even with slacks as part of women's apparel) than when all wore robe-type garments. When God made garments for Adam and Eve there is no indication he made a skirt for Eve and trousers for Adam....

We should respect the sincere convictions of people of course--even though we may disagree with them. But a person who insists on using Deuteronomy 22:5 as a text (out of context) against slacks better be sure his suit is not made of more than one kind of material. And he should be sure he is wearing four tassels on his garment!--things also mentioned in this chapter. Let us at least be consistent....

Let us take a stand for the high standards of the gospel. Let us stand firm for honesty, fairness, kindness, integrity and love; let us practice holiness but let it be "true holiness" from the heart not a false holiness as that of the Pharisees. Let us never confuse the over-all objectives of Christianity with petty points of men's traditions.
